Costa Rican nature conservation organizations

While we (Cris mostly) were looking for volunteer organizations, we found many. For future reference, we list them here. Being listed here, simply means  that we found the organization. It is not an endorsement, nor does it mean that the organization works with volunteers. We were looking for nature conservation organizations, but as you’ll see, some have a broader aim.

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

“Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary is dedicated to the protection and conservation of Costa Rica’s wildlife. To accomplish this, we provide wildlife rehabilitation, environmental education and implement wildlife research.” .

Asociación Cívica de Nosara / The Nosara Civic Association (NCA)

Asociación Costa Rica Por Siempre

“We are a nonprofit organization that seeks the conservation of Costa Rican marine and terrestrial ecosystems in perpetuity through the management of environmental funds and alliances with governments, the private sector and civil society.”

Asociación de Organizaciones del Corredor Biológico Talamanca Caribe (ACBTC)

“The principal objective … is the protection of the Biological Corridor, as a geographical area, which seeks to ensure the connection between the protected areas, indigenous territories, and promote the genetic exchange of wild species of flora and fauna.” The organization consists of 16 associations, listed here. .

Centro Agronómico Tropical de Investigación y Enseñanza (CATIE) / Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center

“The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) is a regional center dedicated to research and graduate education in agriculture, and the management, conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.” .

Asociación Terra Nostra

Centro Científico Tropical (CCT) / Tropical Science Center

El Centro de Rescate de Especies Marinas Amenazadas / Rescue Center for Endangered Marine Species (CREMA)

“We are a marine conservation and research organization working to protect ocean resources and promote sustainable fisheries policies in Costa Rica and Central America.” .

Corcovado foundation

Fondo para Guanacaste

Fundacion Neotropica / Neotropic foundation

The Neotropic Foundation promotes the participation and social self-management for the conservation and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits generated by natural resources. .

IUCN, Regional Office for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean

Jaguar Rescue Center

“The Jaguar Rescue Center is a temporary or permanent home for ill, injured and orphaned animals. With a focus on birds, reptiles, amphibians and small primates, the JRC provides veterinary services, round-the-clock care and comfort to animals that would otherwise be unable to survive in the rainforest or the sea of the Caribbean.” .

Monteverde Conservation League

The [Bosque Eterno de los Niños] is owned and managed by the Monteverde Conservation League, a Costa Rican nonprofit organization founded in 1986. To date, the MCL’s main achievement has been to purchase and protect this wonderland, and it continues to acquire critical, strategic pieces of land when funds area available. The organization’s main focus now, however, is on other forms of consolidation – specifically, seeking ways to achieve greater financial sustainability, strengthen its education programs, and foster more research in the BEN. .

Osa Conservation

Osa wildlife sanctuary / Fundacion Santuario Silvestre de Osa

“Osa Wildlife Sanctuary … is a local enterprise wholly committed to providing wildlife rescue and rehabilitation for orphaned, injured and displaced animals indigenous to the southern zone of Costa Rica.” .

Refuge for wildlife

Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación (SINAC) / National System of Conservation Areas

“The Costa Rican National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC) integrally manages the conservation and sustainable management of wildlife, forest resources, protected areas, watersheds and water systems, together with actors in society, for the wellness of current and future generations.”


The tree of life

“We provide a safe haven to animals that need refuge because of loss of habitat, accidents, victims of pet trade or hunting. Many of those animals can be nursed back to a healthy condition, and can be released into their natural habitat.” .
